Later that same morning, Tanner almost ran over Beth in the hallway outside her room. She was just coming out of her bedroom, her hair neatly in place. A dress, the golden brown of burnished autumn, brought out the color in her cheeks and made her hair glisten. God, he wanted to take her right here in his motherâs house.
He glanced down the empty hall and grabbed Beth by the arm. She tensed and resisted him, but he managed to push her back into her room.
âWhat are you doing?â she hissed between clenched teeth.
Bethâs room was across the hall and down two doors from Rose and Travisâs room, but they were out riding this morning, and his mother was in the office taking care of business. They were upstairs alone.
âIâd like a word with you,â he said, firmly shutting the door behind him and blocking any escape route.
âAre you crazy? If your mother or brother were to find us, weâd arouse suspicion. Get out, now!â
âNot until Iâve asked a few questions.â
âLike what?â she said, jerking loose of his hold.
He stepped to within inches of her. âLike why in the hell you never told me that my brother was the man you were going to marry?â
âI would have loved to have shared that information with you, but Tanner and Tucker? How was I to know you were related,â she said, sarcasm dripping from her words. âAnd you never asked for the name of the man who was going to marry me, remember.â
âHeâs my brother, damn it!â Tanner said, his voice louder than heâd intended.
âShh!â she said right back at him, her face inches from his. âHow was I to know? The better question would be why werenât you honest with me? Why didn't you give me your full name?â
âI didnât think it was information you needed.â
âIâd say you were wrong.â She took a deep breath, her chest rising with indignation. âIf you had used Burnett just once, I would have known. Instead, I was as surprised as you!â
He wanted to reach out, smooth back her hair, touch her, taste her full lips until she was begging him to take her, but she belonged to his brother now, not him. She was strictly off limits.
He grabbed her by the arm, bringing her close to him. âMy brother can never know what happened between us. Youâre going to marry him, just like before.â
Her hazel-green eyes turned to emerald stones that glittered as cold as ice. âWhy would I tell him? Youâve made it clear that our one night was a mistake. So why would I give up marrying the man I originally planned to for you?â She pushed him away. âDonât worry about me; Iâm a survivor. No matter what, Iâll be fine.â
Tanner ran his hand through his hair, wanting to clear his thinking. He hadnât been honest with her. He hadnât told her his last name. He had made it clear that their night of passion was just that, a night, not a lifetime.
